Former Presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton are featured in an award-winning Transportation Bill ad campaign developed by American Road Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) and American Public Transportation Association (APTA).
They say that curiosity killed the cat, so take measures to protect your pets from harm around your house. Here are tips for pet-proofing your home.
Kitchen and bathroom
Try looking at your house from your pets level to determine what kinds of temptations and dangers are lurking.
Place potentially dangerous items like medications, cleaners, laundry supplies and chemicals on high shelves or in cabinets with childproof locks. Other hazardous items include rat poison, mothballs and fabric softener sheets.Food should be kept out of reach, even if you dont think it will do your pet any harm.Petfinder.com warns that coffee grinds, chocolate and cigarettes can also be poisonous...
ALBANY, Ore. Oregon drivers may someday have a choice in how they pay a road users fee.
A task force within the state Department of Transportation is reviewing mileage-based assessments and looking at electronic systems for measuring and reporting mileage, systems that may already be used by private companies.
The Albany Democrat-Herald (http://bit.ly/JJ4QY3) reports the task force will invite its own members, Transportation Department employees and perhaps legislators to take part in a pilot study that would allow a driver to pick a mileage system to test.
Driving the issue is a drop in revenue from the state fuel tax, which pays for highway and bridge maintenance. Revenue...
Last week, I had coffee with a friend of mine whom I hadn’t seen in 15 years, when we were both sophomores in high school. Amazingly, it felt as if little time had passed. Of course we indulged in our fair share of reminiscing. But what was truly gratifying about the reunion was the opportunity to realize just how similar out paths have been over the last decade and a half.
My friend and I have both struggled with disordered eating and body image issues. We have both turned to meditation, therapy, and yoga to help us through out insecurities. And we have both come to understand the value of authenticity and personal growth. We were 10 years old when we met, and we had no way of knowing...
TORONTO – The Toronto stock market looks set for another tepid showing this week with buyers discouraged by data showing further deterioration in economic conditions and rising uncertainty from the eurozone.
Market performance is also starting to look eerily similar to 2010 and 2011 when indexes started off strong, only to flag part way through the year.
The Toronto market ended last week down another 1.48 per cent. That left the main index down 2.17 per cent from where it started the year, when traders were pleasantly surprised at a run of economic data that came in better than expected, including American job growth that was finally exceeding 200,000 jobs a month.

The City of Seattle sent out this press release today:
This Mothers Day weekend, summer-like weather is forecast for the Seattle area. The Seattle Animal Shelter urges pet owners to take preventative measures to keep their pets safe in the warm weather.
This week we have already had to rescue a pet from a potentially dangerous heat-related situation. Even when we have temperatures in the 70s, the inside of a car left in the sun can reach a fatal 130 degrees in a matter of minutes. When temperatures get up in the 80s or higher, its advisable to just avoid leaving your pets in a car if at all possible. Its not worth the risk, says Shelter Director Don Jordan.
He...
All societies have creation myths, ideas that are so fundamental that they have survived over time and define the heart of why people came together in the first place. In the United States, there is no idea more enduring than that anyone can work himself or herself up the economic ladder to a better present and an even more glorious future.
It turns out, however, that economic mobility may not be as widespread as the politics it supports. Further, it may be swayed by geography so that those in the Northeast and Midwest have a better chance than those in the South of actually moving on up.
In a report that is the first of its kind, researchers at the Economic Mobility Project...
Henry loves fetching his tennis ball and playing tug with his stuffed animals. About 6 years old, the Shih Tzu mix likely has many good years left.
In a way, that worries his owner.
Fern Edson adopted Henry from the PAWS Chicago animal shelter almost four years ago. Her age: 84. I really didnt think about the age difference, Edson said. About 18 months later, I started thinking about it.
Edson, whose investment banker husband died 12 years ago, has found peace of mind about Henrys future, however. Shes enrolled in PAWS Guardian Angel pet care program, in which donors who leave bequests to the no-kill shelter are assured it will care for animals that outlive their owners.
Its...
